About Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Hitchcock was an English filmmaker, born on 13 August 1899 in Leytonstone. He trained as a technical clerk and copywriter before entering the film industry in 1919 as a title card designer. He died on 29 April 1980, after a career that spanned six decades and more than 50 feature films as a director.

Hitchcock made his directorial debut with the silent film The Pleasure Garden in 1926. His first successful film was The Lodger in 1927, and Blackmail in 1929 was the first British talkie. The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes were ranked among the greatest British films of the 20th century. After producer David O. Selznick persuaded him to move to Hollywood, he made Rebecca, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. He also hosted and produced the television anthology Alfred Hitchcock Presents from 1955 to 1965, and he was known as the Master of Suspense.
