About Maggie Smith

Maggie Smith was a British actress, born on 28 December 1934 in Ilford. Known for her wit in comedic and dramatic roles, she had a career on stage and screen spanning eight decades. She began her stage career as a student, performing at the Oxford Playhouse in 1952, and made her professional debut on Broadway in New Faces of 56. She worked for the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and was made a dame in 1990.

Smith won two Academy Awards, Best Actress for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Best Supporting Actress for California Suite, and a Tony Award for Lettice and Lovage. She played Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films and Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey, the latter earning her three Primetime Emmy Awards. Her other films include Death on the Nile, Sister Act and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
