About Peter Graves

Peter Graves, born Peter Duesler Aurness, was an American actor, born on 18 March 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was the younger son of a businessman and a journalist. His elder brother was the actor James Arness. He took the stage name Graves from his mother's family and graduated from Southwest High School in 1944, where he was a two-time Minnesota state track champion in the 120 yard high hurdles. He served in the United States Army Air Forces from 1944 to 1945.

Graves portrayed Jim Phelps in the television series Mission: Impossible from 1967 to 1973 and in its revival from 1988 to 1990. He also played the airline pilot Captain Clarence Oveur in the 1980 comedy Airplane! and its 1982 sequel.

Graves stood a listed 192 cm (6'4"). He was 4 cm taller than Lee Van Cleef, listed at 188 cm (6'2"), who appeared with him in It Conquered the World, and 6 cm taller than Lee Marvin, listed at 186 cm (6'1"), his co-star in The Raid. Graves died on 14 March 2010.
