About Phil Jackson

Phil Jackson is an American former professional basketball player, coach and executive in the National Basketball Association (NBA), born on 17 September 1945 in Deer Lodge. He played college basketball for the North Dakota Fighting Sioux for three years and was selected in the 1967 NBA draft by the New York Knicks, with whom he won two NBA titles as a player. After thirteen seasons in the league he spent five years coaching in minor basketball leagues.

The Chicago Bulls hired Jackson as an assistant coach in 1987, and he was promoted to head coach in 1989, helping the team win six championships between 1991 and 1998. In 1999 he became head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, who won three consecutive titles from 2000 to 2002. After a season off following the 2004 NBA Finals he returned to the Lakers in 2005, won two more championships in 2009 and 2010, and retired in 2011.

Jackson is listed at 203 cm (6'8"). His eleven titles as a head coach are the most in NBA history, and he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.
