About Mary Kom

Mary Kom is an Indian Olympic boxer, politician and former Member of Rajya Sabha. She was born on 24 November 1982 in Manipur, and her full name is Mangte Chungenijang Kom.

Kom is the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times and the only boxer, male or female, to win eight World Championship medals. She qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal in the flyweight category. She won gold at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, becoming the first Indian female boxer to do so, and gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. After her sixth world title in 2018 the Government of Manipur gave her the title Meethoi Leima, and in 2020 she was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.
