About Carmen Kass

Carmen Kass is an Estonian model, actress and fashion journalist, born on 14 September 1978. She grew up in the village of Mäo, near Paide, in Järva County, and was raised with her elder sister and elder brother by their mother. Her father was a chess teacher in Põlva.

At the age of 14 Kass was discovered in a supermarket by a model scout from Milan, but her first venture into modeling was unsuccessful. She moved to Paris at eighteen and appeared on the covers of American, French, British and Italian Vogue, among other magazines. Her first Vogue cover was French Vogue in November 1997. The American edition of Vogue declared her and Gisele Bündchen the two supermodels of the moment on its January 2000 cover. She ran for the European Parliament in 2004 and was president of the Estonian Chess Federation from 2004 to 2011. In 2026 she was appointed editor-in-chief of Elle Baltic.
