About Bernard Hinault

Bernard Hinault is a French former professional road cyclist. He was born on 14 November 1954 in Yffiniac and started cycling as an amateur in his native Brittany. After a successful amateur career he signed with the Gitane-Campagnolo team to turn professional in 1975.

Hinault took breakthrough victories at both the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic and the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré stage race in 1977. In 1978 he won his first two Grand Tours, the Vuelta a España and the Tour de France, and added another Tour victory in 1979 and a win at the 1980 Giro d'Italia. A knee injury forced him to quit the 1980 Tour de France while in the lead, but he won the World Championship road race later that year. He won the Tour again in 1981 and completed his first Giro-Tour double in 1982. He entered thirteen Grand Tours, won ten of them and finished second twice, and he took 147 professional victories, including five Tours de France.

At a listed 175 cm (5'9"), Hinault won the 1983 Vuelta a España, after which a return of his knee problems forced him to miss that year's Tour de France, won by his teammate Laurent Fignon.
