About Jacques Anquetil
Jacques Anquetil was a French road racing cyclist. He was born on 8 January 1934 in Mont-Saint-Aignan and was the first cyclist to win the Tour de France five times, in 1957 and from 1961 to 1964.
Before the 1961 Tour, Anquetil said he would take the yellow jersey on the first day and wear it throughout the race. Two previous winners, Charly Gaul and Federico Bahamontes, were in the field, but he did it. His wins in stage races such as the Tour were built on an exceptional ability to ride alone against the clock in individual time trials, which earned him the name Monsieur Chrono. He won eight Grand Tours, a record when he retired that only Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault have since surpassed.
At a listed 176 cm (5'9"), Anquetil stood at that height as the cyclist who first won five Tours. He died on 18 November 1987.
