About Marco Pantani

Marco Pantani was an Italian road racing cyclist, born on 13 January 1970 in Cesena. He died on 14 February 2004. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest climbing specialists in the history of the sport, and he picked the nickname Il Pirata because of his shaven head and the bandana and earrings he wore.

Pantani rode in an off-the-saddle, relentless climbing style. He recorded the fastest climbs up the Tour de France venues of Mont Ventoux, in 46:00, and Alpe d'Huez, in 36:50. In 1998 he won both the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, one of only eight riders to complete that double. He is the sixth of seven Italians to have won the Tour de France. Other cyclists, including Lance Armstrong and Charly Gaul, have praised his climbing skills.

At a listed 172 cm (5'8"), Pantani stood this height, and his build was said to suit a mountain climber. His style has been contrasted with that of time-trialling experts such as the five-time Tour winner Miguel Induráin.
