About Olga Korbut

Olga Korbut is a Belarusian retired gymnast who competed for the Soviet Union. She was born on 16 May 1955 in Hrodna and is nicknamed the Sparrow from Minsk.

Korbut won four gold medals and two silver medals at the Summer Olympic Games, competing in 1972 and 1976 for the Soviet team. She retired from gymnastics in 1977 at the age of 22, and her 1972 Olympic performances are widely credited with shifting the sport from ballet and elegance toward acrobatics. In 1988 she was the inaugural inductee to the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. She emigrated to the United States in 1991, became a citizen in 2000 and trains gymnasts there.
