About Gabriel Popescu

Gabriel Popescu, known as Gabi, is a Romanian former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He was born on 25 December 1973 in Craiova, Romania, and began at Electroputere Craiova.

Popescu made his Divizia A debut on 12 September 1992 and played in the 1992 to 93 UEFA Cup against Panathinaikos. In the middle of the 1994 to 95 season he joined Universitatea Craiova, scoring a career-best seven goals in 1996 to 97. He moved to Salamanca for 1.2 million euros in 1998 and debuted in La Liga on 31 January, scoring a hat-trick against Atlético Madrid in a 5 to 4 win on 21 March.
