About Garrincha

Garrincha, born Manuel Francisco dos Santos and nicknamed Mané Garrincha, was a Brazilian professional footballer who played as a right winger. He was born on 28 October 1933 in Magé. The name Garrincha means wren, and because of his popularity in Brazil he was also called Alegria do Povo, or People's Joy.

Garrincha played a vital role in Brazil's 1958 and 1962 World Cup victories. In 1962, when Pelé was injured, he led Brazil to victory and became the first player to win the Golden Ball, the Golden Boot and the World Cup in the same tournament. He was named in the World Cup All-Star Teams of 1958 and 1962 and in the FIFA World Cup All-Time Team in 1994. At club level he played the majority of his professional career for Botafogo, and Brazil never lost a match while fielding both Garrincha and Pelé.
