About Gordon Banks

Gordon Banks was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He was born on 30 December 1937 in Sheffield and died on 12 February 2019. Banks joined Chesterfield in March 1953, played for their youth team in the 1956 FA Youth Cup final and made his first-team debut in November 1958. He was sold to Leicester City in July 1959.

Banks made 679 appearances in a 20-year professional career and won 73 caps for England, starting every game of the 1966 World Cup victory. He played in four cup finals for Leicester City, winning the League Cup in 1964, and moved to Stoke City in April 1967. He was Stoke's goalkeeper in the 1972 League Cup win. A car crash in October 1972 cost him the sight in his right eye, but he was still named NASL Goalkeeper of the Year in 1977 with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. He was named FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year on six occasions.
