About John Paintsil

John Paintsil is a Ghanaian former professional footballer, born on 15 June 1981 in Kumasi. His family name is Paintsil, although it was registered at birth as Pantsil in error. He played comfortably at right back or in midfield and later became an assistant coach at Kaizer Chiefs in the South African Premiership.

Paintsil began in Ghana with Berekum Arsenal and Liberty Professionals, and had a brief spell with Polish side Widzew Łódź before moving to Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2002. There he was part of a team that won the Israeli title, and he made 46 league appearances. He transferred to rivals Hapoel Tel Aviv in December 2004. His club career also took in West Ham United, Fulham, Leicester City, Santos and Maritzburg United, and he played for Ghana at international level.
