About Koji Funamoto

Koji Funamoto is a former Japanese football player who played for the Japan national team. He was born on 12 August 1942 in Hiroshima and played for Hiroshima University High School from 1958 to 1960. With teammates Aritatsu Ogi, Yasuyuki Kuwahara and others, he became locally known for leading the school to second place at the All Japan High School Soccer Tournament in 1959.

Funamoto went straight from high school to club football and joined Toyo Industries in 1961. With him as goalkeeper, Toyo won the National Sports Festival football tournament in 1962 and reached the Emperor's Cup semifinals in 1961 and 1962 and the quarterfinals in 1963. In 1965 the club became an inaugural member of the newly formed Japan Soccer League, the first national league of soccer clubs in Japan.
