About Telmo Zarra

Pedro Telmo Zarraonandía Montoya, known as Telmo Zarra, was a Spanish football forward, born on 20 January 1921 in Erandio. He signed for Athletic Bilbao after playing one season for Erandio.

Zarra spent most of his career at Athletic Bilbao, from 1940 to 1955, and he remains the club's top scorer in competitive matches with 335 goals. He won the Pichichi Trophy as the highest scorer in La Liga six times. His 251 league goals were a Spanish record that lasted nearly six decades, and his 81 goals in the Copa del Rey remain a record. He played 20 times for Spain and scored 20 goals, including four in a 6 to 3 win over Switzerland on 18 February 1951, and the winning goal against England at the 1950 World Cup. After leaving Athletic he played for SD Indautxu and Barakaldo CF.

At a listed 180 cm (5'11"), Zarra stood that height as the Zarra Trophy, awarded to the highest-scoring Spaniard in La Liga, was named in his memory. He died on 23 February 2006.
