About Yukinari Sugawara

Yukinari Sugawara is a Japanese professional footballer who plays as a right-back or right wing-back for Serie A club Cagliari, on loan from the EFL Championship club Southampton, and for the Japan national team. He was born on 28 June 2000 in Toyokawa and began his senior career at Nagoya Grampus.

Nagoya Grampus registered Sugawara as a player in February 2018, and he made his debut the next day in the opening match of the 2018 season against Gamba Osaka. At 17 years, 7 months and 27 days, his starting appearance in the J1 League opening match was the second youngest in history. In April 2018 he signed his first professional contract, the youngest in the club's history at 17 years and 10 months. In 2019 he joined AZ on loan, and he joined the club permanently in 2020. He moved to Southampton in 2024 and spent the 2025 to 2026 season on loan at Werder Bremen. He has represented Japan at youth and full international level.
