About Dick Fosbury

Dick Fosbury was an American high jumper, born on 6 March 1947 in Portland. He is considered one of the most influential athletes in the history of track and field. After retiring he continued to be involved in athletics and served on the executive board of the World Olympians Association.

Fosbury won a gold medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics, revolutionizing the high jump with a back-first technique now known as the Fosbury flop. He sprinted diagonally towards the bar, then curved and leapt backward over it, which gave him a lower center of mass in flight than traditional techniques. The approach has seen nearly universal adoption since his performance in Mexico. He never returned to the Olympics. In 2018 he ran for Blaine County Commissioner, won the seat and took office in 2019.

Fosbury stood a listed 193 cm (6'4"). He died on 12 March 2023. Debbie Brill was developing a similar technique, the Brill Bend, around the same time he developed his own.
