About Oscar Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius is a South African former professional sprinter and double amputee, born on 22 November 1986 in Sandton. Both of his legs were amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old, as he was born with a birth defect that left him missing the outsides of both feet and both fibulas.

Pistorius became a Paralympic champion and then tried to enter nondisabled international competitions, despite objections from the International Association of Athletics Federations, which argued that his artificial limbs gave an unfair advantage. He won that legal dispute. At the 2011 World Championships in Athletics he became the first amputee to win a nondisabled world track medal. At the 2012 Summer Olympics he was the first double-leg amputee participant, and he was the 10th athlete to compete at both the Paralympic and Olympic Games.

Pistorius is listed at 160 cm (5'3").
