About Edward Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax

Edward Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax, was a British Conservative politician, born on 16 April 1881 at Powderham Castle. He was known as the 1st Baron Irwin from 1925 until 1934 and the 3rd Viscount Halifax from 1934 until 1944, and he held several senior ministerial posts.

Halifax served as Viceroy of India from 1926 to 1931 and as Foreign Secretary from 1938 to 1940. He worked closely with Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain on the policy of appeasement toward Adolf Hitler in the years 1936 to 1938. In early May 1940 he was the leading candidate to succeed Chamberlain as prime minister but effectively declined the position, as he felt he would be little more than a figurehead with Winston Churchill running the war. The House of Lords membership was given as the official reason.

Halifax stood at a listed 196 cm (6'5"). He died on 23 December 1959. From December 1940 to May 1946 he served as British Ambassador to the United States.
