About Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc is a patron saint of France, honored as a defender of the French nation. She was born around 1412 to a propertied peasant family at Domrémy in northeast France. In 1428 she asked to be taken to Charles VII, later testifying that visions from the archangel Michael, Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine guided her to help him save France.

Charles sent Joan, who was about seventeen, to Orléans as part of a relief army, and she arrived in April 1429. Nine days later the English abandoned the siege. She encouraged the French to pursue the English in the Loire Campaign, which led to a victory at Patay and opened the way to Reims, where Charles was crowned king with Joan at his side. She took part in the unsuccessful siege of Paris in September 1429 and was captured by Burgundian troops on 23 May 1430.

Joan stood a listed 158 cm (5'2"). She died on 30 May 1431, aged about nineteen. In 1456 an inquisitorial court reinvestigated her trial.
