About King Louis XIV

Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, was King of France from 14 May 1643 until his death in 1715. He was born on 5 September 1638 at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He reigned for 72 years and 110 days, the longest of any monarch in history. He became king when his father, Louis XIII, died in 1643.

Because Louis was too young to rule, his mother and regent, Anne of Austria, chose Cardinal Mazarin as chief minister, and Mazarin trained him in diplomacy and statecraft. After Mazarin died in 1661, Louis decided not to appoint a new chief minister. As an absolute monarch he developed a centralised state ruled from the Palace of Versailles, and he drew many nobles to live there. His reign saw an expansion of the French colonial empire and a flourishing of French culture across Europe.

Louis stood a listed 163 cm (5'4"). During his personal rule France fought the Franco-Dutch War, the Nine Years' War and the War of the Spanish Succession. He died on 1 September 1715 and was succeeded by his great-grandson, Louis XV.
