About Emomali Rahmon

Emomali Rahmon is a Tajikistani politician, born Emomali Sharipovich Rahmonov on 5 October 1952 in Danghara. He was born to a peasant family and became chairman of the collective state farm of his native Danghara. According to his official biography, he graduated from the Tajik State National University with a degree in economics in 1982.

Rahmon was appointed chairman of the Danghara sovkhoz in 1987 and later became a people's deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the Tajik SSR. In 1992 he became Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Tajikistan, a role he held until 1994 as Chairman of the Supreme Assembly. He has served as the third president of Tajikistan since 1994, and since 1998 he has led the People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan.

At a listed 180 cm (5'11"), Rahmon is married to Azizmo Asadullayeva. On 30 September 1999 he was elected vice-president of the United Nations General Assembly for a one-year term.
