About Evo Morales

Evo Morales, whose full name is Juan Evo Morales Ayma, is a Bolivian politician, trade union organizer and former cocalero activist, born on 26 October 1959 in Oruro. He was born to an Aymara family of subsistence farmers in Isallawi, Orinoca Canton, and completed a basic education and mandatory military service.

In 1978 Morales moved to the Chapare Province, where he grew coca and became a trade unionist, rising to prominence in the campesino union. He entered electoral politics in 1995, was elected to Congress in 1997 and became leader of the Movement Toward Socialism party in 1998, a role he held until 2024. He served as the 65th President of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019 and is widely regarded as the country's first president to come from its indigenous population.
