About Ilham Aliyev

Ilham Aliyev, whose patronymic name is Ilham Heydar oghlu Aliyev, is an Azerbaijani politician and statesman. He was born on 24 December 1961 in Baku. He is the son of Heydar Aliyev, the previous president of Azerbaijan, and he has led the New Azerbaijan Party since 2005.

Aliyev briefly served as prime minister under his father before being elected president in 2003, becoming the fourth president of Azerbaijan. He was re-elected for a second term in 2008. After the 2009 constitutional referendum removed presidential term limits, he won further elections in 2013, 2018 and 2024. His wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, has been vice president since 2017.
