About Pál Schmitt

Pál Schmitt is a Hungarian Olympic fencer and politician. He was born on 13 May 1942 in Budapest. In his youth he was a successful fencer, winning two gold medals across two Summer Olympic Games.

Later, Schmitt served as an ambassador during the 1990s and as a Vice-President of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2010. He briefly served as Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary in 2010. He was then elected president of Hungary in a vote of 263 to 59 in the National Assembly and was sworn in on 6 August 2010. He announced his resignation as president to the Hungarian Parliament on 2 April 2012.

Schmitt has a listed height of 190 cm (6'3"). He is married to Katalin Makray, and he is one of the Olympic champions who went on to hold national office in Hungary.
