About Ray Milland

Ray Milland was a Welsh and American actor, born Alfred Reginald Jones on 3 January 1907 in Neath. Before becoming an actor he served in the Household Cavalry of the British Army. His first major role was in The Flying Scotsman in 1929, which led to a contract with MGM and a move to the United States.

Initially known as a star of light comedies, Milland achieved a dramatic breakthrough as an alcoholic writer in Billy Wilder's The Lost Weekend in 1945. The performance won him the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor, a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award, the first such accolades for a Welsh-born actor. He remained with Paramount for almost 20 years.
