About Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier was a Bahamian-American actor, film director, activist and diplomat, born on 20 February 1927 in Miami. He grew up in the Bahamas, moved back to Miami at 15 and to New York City at 16, and joined the American Negro Theatre.

His breakthrough film role was as a high school student in Blackboard Jungle in 1955. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for The Defiant Ones, the first African American to be nominated in that category. In 1964 he won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Actor for Lilies of the Field. In 1967 he appeared in three films addressing race, including To Sir, with Love.
