About Dikembe Mutombo
Dikembe Mutombo was a Congolese-American professional basketball player, born on 25 June 1966 in Kinshasa. He died on 30 September 2024. Mutombo moved to the United States from the Democratic Republic of the Congo at age 21 to attend Georgetown University, hoping to earn a medical degree. Those plans changed when coach John Thompson recruited him to play, and he spent three seasons with the Georgetown Hoyas.
The Denver Nuggets chose Mutombo fourth overall in the 1991 NBA draft. He played center for 18 seasons and six teams, reaching the NBA Finals with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2001 and the New Jersey Nets in 2003. He won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award four times, led the league in blocked shots three times and was named to eight All-Star teams. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.
