About Eric Heiden

Eric Heiden is an American physician and a former long track speed skater, road cyclist and track cyclist. He was born on 14 June 1958 in Madison. His coach was Dianne Holum.

At the 1980 Winter Olympics, Heiden set four Olympic records and one world record, and won five individual gold medals, more than any other athlete at those Games and more than any nation except the Soviet Union and East Germany. His record of five individual Olympic gold medals at a single Winter Games remains unmatched. He delivered the Athlete's Oath at the same Games. He is the only athlete in the history of speed skating to have won all five events in a single Olympic tournament. In 1999 he ranked No. 46 in ESPN's SportsCentury 50 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century, the only speed skater on the list.

At a listed 184 cm (6'0"), Heiden won in both sprint and long-distance events, which few speed skaters have done. In 2000 a Dutch newspaper called him the greatest skater ever.
