About Joël Matip

Joël Matip is a former professional footballer who played as a centre back. He was born on 8 August 1991 in Bochum, born and raised in Germany, and holds Cameroonian and German nationality. He began his professional career with Schalke 04 in 2009.

At Schalke 04 Matip was part of the teams that won the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup in 2011. He made 258 competitive appearances and scored 23 goals before moving to Liverpool on a free transfer in 2016. At Liverpool he won the UEFA Champions League in 2019, starting in the final, along with the 2019 UEFA Super Cup and the 2019 to 20 Premier League. He represented Cameroon at international level, playing at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cups of 2010 and 2014, before announcing his international retirement in 2015.
