About Andre the Giant

Andre the Giant was a French professional wrestler and actor, born André René Roussimoff on 19 May 1946 in Coulommiers. His great size was the result of gigantism caused by excess human growth hormone. He began his career in 1966 and relocated to North America in 1971.

From 1973 to the mid-1980s, Roussimoff was booked by World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) promoter Vincent J. McMahon as a roving special attraction, wrestling for promotions across the United States and in Japan for New Japan Pro-Wrestling. During the 1980s he became a mainstay of the WWF, feuded with Hulk Hogan and headlined WrestleMania III with him in 1987. In 1988 he defeated Hogan to win the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. Outside wrestling, he is best known for playing Fezzik in the 1987 film The Princess Bride.

At a listed 224 cm (7'4"), Roussimoff was known for his great size and was dubbed the Eighth Wonder of the World. He died on 28 January 1993 and became the first inductee into the WWF Hall of Fame.
