About John Tyler

He served as a Virginia state legislator and governor, U.S. representative and U.S. senator. Initially a Jacksonian Democrat, he opposed President Andrew Jackson during the nullification crisis and allied with the southern faction of the Whig Party.

Tyler was a regional Whig vice-presidential nominee in the 1836 presidential election, and in 1840 he was elected vice president on the Whig ticket with William Henry Harrison. He briefly held the office of tenth vice president in 1841 and succeeded to the presidency when Harrison died 31 days after assuming office. As a supporter of states' rights, he adopted nationalistic policies as president only when they did not infringe on the states' powers.
