About Carlos Gardel

Carlos Gardel, born Charles Romuald Gardès, was a French-born Argentine singer, composer and actor. He was born on 11 December 1890 in Toulouse and died on 24 June 1935. Scholarly researchers examined French birth and baptismal records and confirmed Toulouse as his birthplace, despite a 1967 theory that placed it in Tacuarembó, Uruguay.

Gardel is regarded as the most prominent figure in the history of tango and one of the most influential interpreters of popular music in the first half of the 20th century. Described as a baritone or tenor because of his wide vocal range, he was known for his rich voice and dramatic phrasing. With his long-time collaborator, the lyricist Alfredo Le Pera, he wrote several classic tangos. He is commonly called Carlitos, El Zorzal, The King of Tango and El Mago.

Gardel stood at a listed 170 cm (5'7"). He died in an airplane crash at the height of his career and was mourned throughout Latin America, and for many he embodies the soul of the tango style.
