About Marie Laforêt

Marie Laforêt, born Maïtena Marie Brigitte Douménach, was a French singer and actress, particularly well known for her work during the 1960s and 1970s. She was born on 5 October 1939 at Soulac-sur-Mer, in the Médoc region of France, to Jean Doumenach and Marie-Louise. Her father was an industrialist who served in the military in World War II.

Her first name, Maïtena, is of Basque origin and means beloved, while her surname Douménach is Catalan in origin. Her repertoire included pieces inspired by world folklore, and she sometimes described herself as ariégeoise, from the Ariège region in the south of France. In 1978 she moved to Geneva and acquired Swiss citizenship, which is why she is described as both French and Swiss.
