About Sharon den Adel

Sharon den Adel, full name Sharon Janny den Adel, is a Dutch singer and songwriter who is the lead vocalist of the symphonic metal band Within Temptation. She was born on 12 July 1974 in Waddinxveen. As a child she lived in Indonesia for five years, and the Balinese dancers she saw there inspired her dance movements on stage.

Den Adel has been performing since the age of 14, with various bands including a blues rock band called Kashiro. In 1996 she co-founded a band called The Portal with her partner, Robert Westerholt, and the name was changed to Within Temptation before their debut recording. She has a bachelor's degree in fashion design. She was also elected to be the Dutch chairperson of the jury for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018.
