About Paul Martin

Paul Martin, whose full name is Paul Edgar Philippe Martin and who is also known as Paul Martin Jr., is a Canadian lawyer and retired politician. He was born on 28 August 1938 in Windsor, Ontario, the son of former senator and secretary of state for external affairs Paul Martin Sr. He became president and chief executive officer of Canada Steamship Lines in 1973.

Martin held that position until he was elected a member of Parliament for the Montreal riding of LaSalle and Émard in 1988. He ran for the leadership of the Liberal Party in 1990 and lost to Jean Chrétien, who appointed him minister of finance after the 1993 federal election. As minister he oversaw changes to the financial structure of the Canadian government, and his policies cut spending and reformed programs. He won the Liberal leadership in the 2003 leadership election and was sworn in as prime minister that December. He served as the 21st prime minister of Canada until 2006.
