About Traian Băsescu

Traian Băsescu is a Romanian politician, born on 4 November 1951 in Murfatlar. He was a former member of the Romanian Communist Party. Before his presidency he served as Romania's minister of transport on multiple occasions between 1991 and 2000.

Băsescu was Mayor of Bucharest from 2000 to 2004 and was elected leader of the Democratic Party in 2001. Under his leadership the party formed the Justice and Truth Alliance with the National Liberal Party. After Theodor Stolojan withdrew from the 2004 presidential elections, Băsescu entered the race on behalf of the alliance and suspended his party membership after being elected, as Romanian law does not permit an incumbent president to belong to a party. He was re-elected in 2009 and served as president of Romania from 2004 to 2014.
